What does the Masterclass include?

40 hours of Masterclass in XR Optics with team projects on-site plus 1 week hands-on design and remote coaching sessions. At the end of the course, participant will take a final exam and will make a presentation to present their project. You will work with Giuseppe Calafiore, Research Manager at Meta Reality Labs, who has more than 10 years of experience in the field of Optics and Nanotechnologies.

The idea behind this course, led by Giuseppe Calafiore, Research Manager at Meta Reality Labs with more than 10 years of experience in the field of Optics and Nanotechnologies, is to provide an overview to highly specialised professionals (engineers and scientists) on the optics foundations for Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality devices.
During the XR Optics Masterclass, participants will be guided into the understanding of Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality devices, the different tools and the software available. Participants will also put into practice the background theory thanks to case studies and hands-on workshops.
The aim is to give participants a competitive advantage and transmitting the knowledge needed to qualify professionals in this new growing industry in search for talents.

Who Is The XR Optics – Masterclass Bootcamp For?

The XR Optics Masterclass is aimed at students and professionals from the engineering field, such as physics, mechanical, electrical, computer science and maths.

What will I learn?

During the XR Optics Masterclass, participants will learn:

  • Foundations of VR and MR technologies, with a focus on MR display and optics.
  • How to familiarise with cutting-edge research in the field of head-mounted and 3D displays.
  • Past and future of optical architectures for VR/MR goggles.
  • On-demand skills in optical design of nanostructures for light-matter interaction.
  • Waveguide design. Retinal scanning combiner design.
  • Elements of display manufacturing, nanotechnology methods, and main foundries.
  • Open challenges ahead of us to make MR a consumer product.
  • Hands-on training with the world #1 FTDT solver for electro-magnetic field from UV to Infrared light (Lumerical, Ansys).
  • Advanced and proprietary MATLAB scripts will be provided at the end of the course for design of MR combiners.

Eligibility

Age: 18+

Track Record: Professionals with a Master or PhD in an Engineering field; Master’s students; Third-year bachelors may also be admitted if they demonstrate to possess solid competencies in physics and math.
